Description

Nike’s Air Manufacturing Innovation (Air MI) group is a world class engineering and manufacturing facility, and is tasked with developing next generation products for the athlete of the future. The Polymers R&D team drives all aspects of Air MI’s research into material science and technology. Our team consists of a diverse group of scientists and engineers that have a passion for both practicing fundamental science and applying it to innovation of new products and manufacturing processes. Due to its focus on manufacturing, the Polymers R&D team is uniquely positioned for its research staff to work on projects that lie everywhere on the spectrum from fundamental material science to commercial applications and processes.

The Polymers R&D team has an opening for an engineer to contribute to research aimed at developing new foam manufacturing processes for Nike Air Manufacturing Innovation (AirMI). As a process research engineer, you will work as the interface between the Polymers R&D research teams, and Air MI’s manufacturing and engineering teams. You will work on developing new manufacturing processes at the pilot stage. You will be responsible for researching and understanding process challenges, opportunities, and limitations, and will develop a process that is expected to transition to large-scale production.

The successful candidate should have several key competencies. From a broad perspective, the candidate should have an excellent understanding of how to develop robust manufacturing processes. For this specific role, the candidate should possess familiarity with polymer engineering and polymer processing, expertise in executing design of experiments (DoEs) to understand process capabilities and limitations, and understanding of statistical process control and other quality engineering tools. Good quantitative and analytical skills are a necessity.

The successful candidate should also possess good project planning skills, be able to interact with non-experts and distill complex concepts related to their research down to relevant key facts. For these reasons exceptional presentation and data analysis skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Required Bachelor’s degree in field of Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering or related discipline

• Graduate degree in any of the aforementioned fields is preferred

• Working knowledge of polymer engineering and polymer processing is highly recommended

• A good fundamental knowledge of polymer structure-processing-property relationships is preferred, knowledge of polymeric foaming processes is a plus

• Expertise in applying design of experiments (DoEs) to optimize new processes to meet product specifications

• Ability to work with equipment suppliers to troubleshoot machine issues, and use data from process research to drive equipment modifications/iterations

• Fully capable of transitioning process development to large scale manufacturing processes

• Comfortable working in fast paced environment, skilled at multitasking and managing several project deliverables at the same time. As with any research position, being self-motivated and taking initiative with regards to setting research goals is an absolute necessity.

• Possesses disciplined work skills that include project planning, tracking and reporting

• Passionate about applying engineering fundamentals to understand complex problems and drive new process development

• Being a personable team member who has the ability to explain complex data and relationships in simple understandable concepts are essential at being successful in this role.

• Required 5 years of experience in a similar process r&d role
